Get the excitement of flying to Paro, Bhutan, on Druk Air or Bhutan Air! One shining day, you would see beautiful views of the Himalayas, including Mount Everest (for those flying from Delhi or Kathmandu, don’t forget to sit on the left side of the flight!) Your approach is especially breathtaking to Bhutan, as you go down through the foothills and make some sharp turns in between to arrive at the small airstrip. Arriving in Bhutan, you will be greeted and driven by your Bhutanese guide to Thimphu. Based on your flight time, check out the following views:
Kuenselcholing View Point: The best way to get a sense of the Thimphu Valley is at Buddha Point (Kuensel Phodrang). Only about a short drive from a town. At the Buddha site, you can admire the biggest statue in the country, pray, pay your respects, and gawk out of the loveliness of the valley.
Memorial Chorten: This Chorten was built in 1974 as a tribute to the third King of Bhutan, the father of modern Bhutanese society.
Tashichho Dzong: The glorious and powerful fortress of glorious religion – the ‘Dzong’ — was built in 1641 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. It includes: the secretariat building, the throne room, the office of the king and the central monk body. Spend some time relaxing (after exploring the Dzong) and explore the city.
Overnight at the Hotel in Thimphu. Lunch, Dinner Included
Start your morning off with a scenic drive from Thimphu to Paro Valley, where you’ll find the iconic Taktsang Monastery, also known as “Tiger’s Nest”. Famed for Guru Rimpoche or Guru Padmasambhava who flew on the back of a tigress from Tibet and meditated in the cave for three months, the monastery is perched on a rock overlooking a 9,678-foot sheer drop. Despite the main building being destroyed by a fire in 1998, the hike up to the monastery’s viewpoint is an exhilarating experience, taking about two and a half hours of average walking (five hours round trip).
If you’d rather avoid hiking, you can choose to ride a horse for an additional US$30 per person (cost is subject to change).
After your journey to the top, visit Kichu Lhakhang, Ringpung Zong, and the National Museum to get a glimpse of how the locals live.
Departure: Transfer to Paro Airport and fly to Kathmandu (1310 m) or your onward destination.
Paro International Airport connects to the international airports of Nepal (Kathmandu; KTM), India (Delhi, Bagdogra, Kolkotta, Gaya, Guwahati), Bangladesh (Dhaka), Thailand (Bangkok), and Singapore (SIN).
