A Week in Nepal: How to Spend 7 Days in the Himalayan Nation

Planning a trip to Nepal? Here’s a perfect idea of how you can spend a full week exploring this Himalayan nation. We’ve outlined a day-by-day guide with the best things to do, excluding your arrival and departure days in Kathmandu. To truly enjoy the complete experience, we recommend planning for at least 8–10 days in Nepal.

DAY 01: Kathmandu – Explore the City of Temples

Pashupatinath Temple Kathmandu

Kathmandu, the vibrant capital of Nepal, is a treasure trove of history, culture, and spirituality. Known as the City of Temples, it is home to sacred shrines, centuries-old palaces, bustling courtyards, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. If you have just a single day in the city, here’s the perfect itinerary to soak in its essence.

1. Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple)

Begin your day with a drive to Swayambhunath Stupa, perched high on a hill overlooking the entire Kathmandu Valley. This ancient Buddhist site is affectionately called the Monkey Temple due to the playful monkeys that inhabit the area. The stupa’s golden spire, fluttering prayer flags, and the serene chants of monks create an atmosphere of peace and devotion. It is also one of the most iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Nepal.

2. Kathmandu Durbar Square (Hanuman Dhoka / Basantapur)

Next, head to the heart of the city—Kathmandu Durbar Square. Once the royal palace complex, this historic square is a masterpiece of traditional Newari architecture, featuring intricately carved wooden windows, age-old courtyards, and temples dedicated to Hindu deities. Known locally as Hanuman Dhoka Square or Basantapur Durbar Square, it offers a glimpse into Nepal’s regal past and vibrant culture.

3. Boudhanath Stupa

In the afternoon, visit Boudhanath Stupa, the largest Buddhist stupa in Nepal and another UNESCO site. The massive white dome with the all-seeing eyes of the Buddha is surrounded by prayer wheels and colorful flags, creating a powerful spiritual vibe. Join the pilgrims in walking around the stupa, spin the prayer wheels, and immerse yourself in the sacred energy. Don’t miss having lunch at one of the rooftop cafés nearby, which provide the best panoramic views of the stupa.

4. Pashupatinath Temple

Conclude your day with a visit to Pashupatinath Temple, the holiest shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Situated on the banks of the Bagmati River, this temple complex is a fascinating blend of spirituality, rituals, and architecture. The sacred ghats (cremation sites) along the river offer a moving insight into Hindu traditions, while the ornate wood carvings inside the temple reflect centuries of devotion. Stay until evening to witness the Aarati ceremony, where chants, fire, and music create a mesmerizing spiritual atmosphere.

DAY 02: Explore Patan, Bhaktapur & Nagarkot

Bhakapur Durbar Square

On this day, you will explore two of the most culturally rich heritage sites in the Kathmandu Valley — Patan Durbar Square and Bhaktapur Durbar Square — before heading to Nagarkot, a popular hill station known for its stunning Himalayan views. After a full day of sightseeing, you will stay overnight in Nagarkot.

Patan Durbar Square

Begin your morning with a visit to Patan Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest examples of Newari art and architecture. Famous for its beautifully crafted temples, stone carvings, and courtyards, Patan reflects Nepal’s rich cultural heritage. Most of the monuments here were built during the Malla period (16th–18th century), showcasing exquisite woodwork and stone craftsmanship.

Bhaktapur Durbar Square

Next, take a short drive to Bhaktapur Durbar Square, often called the “Living Museum of Nepal.” Known for its ancient temples, royal palaces, traditional courtyards, and statues, Bhaktapur preserves the medieval charm of the Kathmandu Valley. Don’t miss the Pottery Square, where you can see local artisans creating clay pots using age-old techniques — a true highlight for cultural travelers.

Drive to Nagarkot

In the late afternoon, drive towards Nagarkot, one of the most famous hill stations near Kathmandu. Located about 28 km from Tribhuvan International Airport and sitting at an altitude of around 2,000 meters above sea level, Nagarkot is best known for its breathtaking sunrise and sunset views over the Himalayan range. On clear days, you may even catch a glimpse of Mount Everest along with other majestic peaks. An overnight stay in Nagarkot offers the perfect blend of peace, natural beauty, and mountain scenery.

You complete your second day visiting those amazing sites in the Kathmandu valley. If you are looking for a day trip to these sites, why not check out the Patan and Bhaktapur Durbar Squares Day trip? We offer this trip with a professional tour guide, air-conditioned private transport, etc.
